TextAloud with iTunes/iPod
TextAloud Integration with iTunes
TextAloud can now be used with iTunes to automatically place created audio
files into iTunes for easy syncing with your iPod, iPhone, or other iTunes
compatible mp3 player.
Starting with
version 2.273, we added the ability to automatically add TextAloud mp3 audio
to iTunes. With the option enabled, mp3 files generated by TextAloud are
automatically added to your iTunes library, in a playlist name you can
specify.
Two
dialogs in TextAloud have been updated to let you control the iTunes file
updates. First, a checkbox and playlist field name have been added to the
“File Options” panel, on the “Voices and File Options” dialog.

Supported Audio Formats
– Currently, TextAloud will copy only mp3 audio to iTunes. iTunes / iPods
do not support the WMA format, and TextAloud needs to perform an extra
encoding step to copy WMA files to iTunes. You can still add WMA files to
iTunes manually (iTunes will automatically convert WMA files to another
format when you add them manually). We plan to be able to copy WMA files
automatically in a future release of TextAloud.
File Locations in iTunes
– When TextAloud copies mp3 files to iTunes, your iTunes library is updated
with the new mp3 file. The physical location of the mp3 file depends on a
configuration option in iTunes. The setting is called “Copy files to iTunes
Music folder when adding to library”; you can locate this setting in iTunes
by selecting Edit -> Preferences, and click the Advanced tab.
If
“Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library” is selected,
iTunes will make a copy of any file added to iTunes, and store it in your
music folder. Otherwise, your iTunes library will simply point at any audio
files added. Only one copy of the audio file exists on your machine.
Playlist Names –
By default, TextAloud will create a playlist in iTunes called “TextAloud”,
and write all mp3 audio files to this playlist. You can change this
playlist name at any time on either the Voices and File Options dialog, or
Batch File Converter dialogs in TextAloud. You can use different playlist
names to keep your audio files organized, and in addition, iTunes lets you
pick which playlists are synced with your iPod. If you don’t need to use
multiple playlists we suggest that you let TextAloud copy all your iTunes
audio to the default “TextAloud” playlist.
Synching your iPod
– When TextAloud updates your iTunes library it does not update your iPod.
Once you’ve completed updating iTunes with audio from TextAloud, simply sync
your iPod from iTunes as you normally do. The sync will update your device
with your TextAloud audio and playlists.
