False positives reported by anti-virus software

Post by Jim Bretti »

Occasionally antivirus software will falsely report that our installers contain viruses, adware, malware, etc. For every TextAloud update, we run the installer (and all executables) through a very comprehensive scan at https://www.virustotal.com, where more than 50 different antivirus programs scan the install.

There is a good article on this topic (false positives) at http://lifehacker.com/5521993/how-do-yo ... as-a-virus

Always use your own judgement when installing any software on your system. We take this very seriously and do our best to keep our development systems clean, and scan any executable we distribute before making it available to download.

If Windows Defender is blocking the install, you'll see an error dialog with text like "Windows Defender SmartScreen prevent an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk". If that dialog is displayed, click the "More Info" link on the dialog, and a "Run anyway" button should be displayed. The install should run normally when you click the Run anyway button.
