TextAloud Toolbar does not appear in Outlook

Post by Jim Bretti »

Here are some things to try if the TextAloud toolbar does not appear in Outlook.

If you're running TextAloud 4, make sure you are running version 4.0.66 or later. There is an update in version TextAloud 4.0.66 that solves problems with the TextAloud Add-In for Outlook being disabled in some situations. To check what version of TextAloud you're running click Help -> About from the TextAloud main menu. Visit https://nextup.com/download.html to download an installer for the current version of TextAloud.

If you have problems enabling the Outlook Add-in with TextAloud 4.0.66 or later installed please contact support@nextup.com and let us know. You can also continue with the troubleshooting steps below.

In Outlook, click View -> Toolbars, and see if the TextAloud toolbar is there, but not enabled. If the TextAloud toolbar appears under the view menu, it should have a checkmark beside it. Sometimes all you need to do is re-check the entry, and the toolbar will show up.

If this doesn't work, the next steps depend on which version of Outlook you are running.

If you have the 64 bit version of Office installed (Office 2010 or later)

Support for 64 bit Office was added in TextAloud version 3.0.35. From the TextAloud main window, click Help -> About. If you're running an earlier version of TextAloud, download the latest version using one of these links:

TextAloud 3
http://nextup.com/files/ta3.exe

TextAloud 4
http://nextup.com/files/ta4.exe

If you're not sure which version of Office you have, run Outlook, click the File tab in the ribbon, and click Help. You should see an area in the Help window labeled "About Microsoft Outlook", and will indicate if you are running the 32 bit or 64 bit version.

If you have problems with the 64 bit version of Outlook and you have TextAloud version 3.0.35 or later installed, continue with the remaining debugging steps in this post.

If you're running Outlook 2010 or later

Click the File tab in the ribbon, and click Options in the left pane.

In the left pane, select “Add-ins”. You’ll see a list of add-ins, grouped by active, inactive, and disabled add-ins. You want to check if the TextAloud toolbar appears in this list as inactive or disabled.

If the TextAloud add-in is disabled or inactive in the Outlook Options dialog, look at the very bottom of the dialog and you’ll see a dropdown list labeled “Manage”. Set the value in that dropdown to “COM Add-ins”, and click “Go”. Then, in the dialog displayed, see if there is a TextAloud entry in the list, and make sure the checkbox for the entry is checked.

Next, return to the Outlook Options dialog, and click the Add-ins button in the left pane. At the very bottom of the dialog, change the dropdown list lableled "Manage" to "Disabled Items" and click the "Go" button. If the Textaloud toolbar appears in the list of disabled items, select it, click the Enable button, and close the dialog.

Exit and restart Outlook and see if the TextAloud toolbar appears.

If you're running Outlook 2007

Click Tools -> Trust Center from the Outlook menu.

In the left pane, select “Add-ins”. You’ll see a list of add-ins, grouped by active, inactive, and disabled add-ins. You want to check if the TextAloud toolbar appears in this list as inactive or disabled.

If the TextAloud add-in is disabled or inactive in the Trust Center dialog, look at the very bottom of the dialog and you’ll see a dropdown list labeled “Manage”. Set the value in that dropdown to “COM Add-ins”, and click “Go”. Then, in the dialog displayed, see if there is a TextAloud entry in the list, and make sure the checkbox for the entry is checked.

Next, return to the Trust Center dialog, and click the Add-ins button in the left pane.

If you're running Outlook 2003

Click Help -> About Microsoft Outlook, and at the very bottom of the dialog you'll see a button labeled "Disabled Items". Click this button and see if the TextAloud toolbar appears in the list as disabled. If the toolbar is disabled, select the entry for the toolbar and click the "Enable" button.

If that doesn't help, click Tools -> Options, and on the Options dialog click the tab labeled "Other". Near the top of the panel, click the "Advanced Options" button, and on the Advanced Options dialog, click the "COM Add-ins" button. Verify that the TextAloud toolbar appears in this window, and that the checkbox for the entry is selected (checked).
