How to display the Windows Speech control panel

Post by Jim Bretti »

It is sometimes useful to use the Windows speech control panel when troubleshooting voice related problems. This post contains instructions on how to launch the applet. Note that if you're running a 64 bit version of windows, you will need to launch a 32 bit version of the applet, since all TextAloud voices are currently 32 bit.

If you're running Windows 10
In current versions of Windows 10, the Speech panel in Windows Settings only displays Windows Mobile voices. Desktop voices, like the ones we distribute at NextUp, do not appear on this panel. To view settings for your Sapi5 desktop voices follow the instructions below. In addition, TextAloud does not currently support Windows Mobile voices. So the voices that appear on the Speech panel in Windows 10 settings will not be available in TextAloud.

64 bit versions of Windows with TextAloud 3.0.70 or later
If you are running a 64 bit version of windows and have TextAloud 3.0.70 or later installed, you can launch the 32 bit Speech Control Panel by clicking an entry in the TextAloud start menu folder.

For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7, locate the TextAloud application folder in your Start menu, and click "32 bit Speech Control Panel".

For 64 bit versions of Windows 8, go to your start screen and type "32 bit speech control panel" (without the quotes). Also, on the start screen, you can click the arrow in the bottom left of the start screen, or 'swipe up' to view the 'all apps' screen. Find the TextAloud group in this screen, and click the entry "32 bit Speech Control Panel".

For 64 bit versions of Windows 10, click your Start button, then click All Apps. Scroll to the TextAloud folder, and in that folder, click "32 bit Speech Control Panel".

If you are running a 32 bit version of Windows or do not have TextAloud 3.0.70 installed, follow the instructions below for your version of Windows.
