Debugging problems with TA Toolbar for Word

Post by Jim Bretti »

Here are some things to try if the TextAloud toolbar does not appear in Microsoft Word.

If you're running TextAloud 4, make sure you are running version 4.0.66 or later. There is an update in version TextAloud 4.0.66 that solves problems with the TextAloud Add-In for Microsoft Word being disabled in some situations. To check what version of TextAloud you're running click Help -> About from the TextAloud main menu. Visit https://nextup.com/download.html to download an installer for the current version of TextAloud.

If you have problems enabling the Word Add-in with TextAloud 4.0.66 or later installed please contact support@nextup.com and let us know. You can also continue with the troubleshooting steps below.

If you're running a version of Office earlier than Office 2007, click View -> Toolbars, and see if the TextAloud toolbar is there, but not enabled. If the TextAloud toolbar appears under the view menu, it should have a checkmark beside it. Sometimes all you need to do is re-check the entry, and the toolbar will show up.

If this doesn't work, the next steps depend on which version of Word you are running.

If you're running Word Starter 2010
Add-ins such as the TextAloud toolbar for Word are not supported in Word Starter edition. The only solution is to upgrade your version of Microsoft Word.

If you have a 64 bit version of Word installed
Support for 64 bit Office was added in TextAloud version 3.0.35. From the TextAloud main window, click Help -> About. If you're running an earlier version of TextAloud, download the latest version from http://www.nextup.com/files/ta3.exe. If you're not sure which version of Microsoft Office you have, run Word, click the File tab in the ribbon, and click Help. You should see an area in the Help window labeled "About Microsoft Word", and will indicate if you are running the 32 bit or 64 bit version.

If you have problems with the 64 bit version of Word and you have TextAloud version 3.0.35 or later installed, continue with the remaining debugging steps in this post.

If you're running Word 2007 or later
For Word 2007, Click the round Office button in the top left corner of the window, and click the Word Options button.
For Word 2010 and later, click the File tab in the ribbon, and click Options in the left pane to display the Word Options dialog.

In the left pane of the Word Options dialog, select “Add-ins”. You’ll see a list of add-ins, grouped by active, inactive, and disabled add-ins. You want to check if the TextAloud toolbar appears in this list as inactive or disabled.

If the TextAloud add-in is disabled, look at the very bottom of the dialog and you’ll see a dropdown list labeled “Manage”. Set the value in that dropdown to “COM Add-ins”, and click “Go”. Then, in the dialog displayed, see if there is a TextAloud entry in the list, and make sure the checkbox for the entry is checked. Then exit and restart Word.

If you're running Word 2003
Click Help -> About Microsoft Word, and at the very bottom of the dialog you'll see a button labeled "Disabled Items". Click this button and see if the TextAloud toolbar appears in the list as disabled. If the toolbar is disabled, select the entry for the toolbar and click the "Enable" button.

If this doesn't help send us an email at support@nextup.com.
