Problems with Scansoft Sin-ji

Post by Jim Bretti »

The Cantonese Sin-Ji voice from Scansoft has a couple of known issues, this post will describe the known problems and how to work around them. The known problems are:

1. Full-width punctuation in the text (e.g. "," or "。") causes word highligting to stop working.

2. The voice is very character set sensitive, and only handles Traditional Chinese. Any characters from the Simplified Chinese character set will cause the voice to stop speaking.

To workaround these problems, download the zip file at http://www.nextup.com/support/sinjifix.zip and follow these instructions.

First, the zip contains a TextAloud pronunciation dictionary that translates full-width punctuation characters. To install the dictionary, run TextAloud, and from the main menu, click Help -> Open Data Folder. Copy the dictionary file in this zip file, Scansoft Sin-ji.chl, to the Dictionaries folder. You can view the dictionary contents by clicking Tools -> Pronunciation Dictionary Maintenance, a Dictionary called "Scansoft Sin-ji" should appear in your list of installed dictionaries.

Next, the zip also contains a file named reseller.chl. This is basically a TextAloud options file that has been configured with an option to remap Simplified Chinese to Traditional Chinese characters. The file needs to be placed in your TextAloud install directory. On 32 bit versions of Windows, the TextAloud install directory is normally c:\Program Files\TextAloud. On 64 bit versions of Windows, the install directory is normally C:\Program Files (x86)\TextAloud

Copy the file Reseller.chl to your TextAloud install directory, then exit and restart TextAloud. The reseller options file is read only at TextAloud startup, so a TextAloud restart is required when the file is put in place or modified.
