Troubleshooting problems with TextAloud Extension for Firefox

Post by Jim Bretti »

Starting with Firefox 74 (released March 2010), the TextAloud Extension for Firefox no longer works from the TextAloud installer.

If you have the extension installed and upgrade to Firefox 74, the extension should continue to work.

If you need to reinstall the extension for any reason you can download an installer that will remove the current extension, version 4.0.8, and prompt you through a web install for an updated version of the extension (4.0.10).

You can download the installer from https://nextup.com/support/UpdateFirefoxExtension.exe. Just run the installer and follow the instructions displayed.

If the web install fails

If the web install fails it could be related to your antivirus software, we have found issues related to using Kaspersky and ESET Nod32 Antivirus. If you're using either of these products, the web install will fail, the error dialog displayed by Firefox simply says "the add-on could not be downloaded because of a connection failure". Try the instructions below to work around the problem.

Kaspersky Antivirus
  • Open the Kaspersky window, and go to settings. (Click the Gear button at the bottom left of the window).
  • In the left tab of Settings dialog, click "Additional".
  • On the Additional tab, click "Network".
  • Scroll down to the settings under "Encrypted connection scanning", and click "Manage Exclusions"
  • In the Exclusions dialog, click the Add button
  • Enter the domain name nextup.com, make sure the Status radio button is set to Active, and click Add.
  • Close the Kaspersky settings window and retry the web install
  • On the left side of the page, click Extensions

ESET Nod32
  • Open the ESET window and click Setup.
  • In the setup panel click Internet Protection
  • In the Internet Protection panel, locate Web access protection, and click the gear button on the far right.
  • In the Advanced Setup dialog displayed, click "WEB AND EMAIL", on the left side of the window
  • Expand the item "SSL/TLS"
  • In the SSL/TLS section locate "List of known certificates" and click the Edit link
  • In the certificates dialog displayed click the Add button
  • At the top of the Add Certificate dialog, click the URL button to indicate you're importing a certificate from a url
  • In the Load Certificate dialog enter https://nextup.com as the url and click OK. You'll return to the Edit Certificate dialog
  • In the Edit Certificate dialog set the Access Action radio button to Auto
  • In the Edit Certificate dialog set the Scan Action radio button to Ignore
  • Click OK to close the dialog and save your changes
  • Close the ESET settings window and retry the web install

Installing the extension manually

If at this point the firefox extension is not available, you can try installing the extension manually. Here are instructions:
  • You may have already have tried clicking the link "Install TextAloud Extension for Firefox, but give it another try.
  • If the install fails, right click the link, and in the popup displayed, click "Save link as ..."
  • You'll be prompted to save an xpi file for the extension, just save it to any folder on your machine. You can save it to your desktop.
  • Click and hold the xpi file you just downloaded, and drag it anywhere in the Firefox window to install the extension.
  • Delete the xpi file you downloaded
Please send an email to support@nextup.com if this information doesn't help or if you have any questions.
