Configuring Keyboard Shortcuts in the TA Chrome Extension

Post by Jim Bretti »

It is possible to configure keyboard shortcuts for the TextAloud extension for Chrome. In Chrome, type chrome://extensions/shortcuts in the address bar. Or, click the menu button displayed at the top left of the Extensions page and click Keyboard Shortcuts. The page displayed will allow you to configure keyboard shortcuts for all your Chrome extensions.

Note that function keys are not supported as keyboard shortcuts. Here is a note on supported keys from Chrome documentation:

Supported keys: A-Z, 0-9, Comma, Period, Home, End, PageUp, PageDown, Space, Insert, Delete, Arrow keys (Up, Down, Left, Right) and the Media Keys (MediaNextTrack, MediaPlayPause, MediaPrevTrack, MediaStop).

Note: All key combinations must include either Ctrl* or Alt. Combinations that involve Ctrl+Alt are not permitted in order to avoid conflicts with the AltGr key. Shift can be used in addition to Alt or Ctrl, but is not required. Modifiers (such as Ctrl) can not be used in combination with the Media Keys. Tab key was removed from list of supported keys in Chrome version 33 and above for accessibility reasons.

Also, note that Pause/Resume and Stop are not configurable as keyboard shortcuts for the extension. The reason for this is that these functions can be configured as system wide hotkeys in the TextAloud application. To create these hotkeys, go to the TextAloud application, and from the menu, click Tools -> Hotkey Setup. You can configure Stop and Pause/Resume hotkeys from this dialog.
